Simon Richman

Our Team Leader

Simon Richman was born and raised in Cape Town, but also has roots in New Zealand, where his mother's family lives. He loves sports and outdoor activities, which are part of the culture in both countries.

Simon moved to London after university and worked a snow season in Vail, Colorado. He became passionate about snowboarding and traveled across Europe, the Americas and New Zealand to pursue his hobby. He also joined the British Territorial army and worked as a military instructor and Physical Training Instructor. He helped to establish the largest outdoor fitness company in the United Kingdom (British Military Fitness).

He then returned to Cape Town and got a job with White Desert, a company that operates in Antarctica. He was the Logistics manager for their operations and spent six weeks on the ice building and securing the camp. He was amazed by the beauty and uniqueness of Antarctica, the most remote place on Earth. He was fascinated by the wildlife, the colors, the extremes and the scale of the continent. He decided that he wanted to go back and share this incredible experience with others.

Simon is a passionate sport and outdoor enthusiast. He loves to travel and exploring the world's wild places, which inspire and motivate him. He has accomplished 15 full and ultra marathons, as well as military endurance events. He is also a qualified Game Ranger who enjoys guiding and helping others experience amazing wild places. For him, Antarctica is the ultimate destination. He believes that witnessing the pristine wonders and magnificence of the environment there will make anyone want to live life fully and also to protect nature.

In Simon’s words, he resonates with the Māori word "Kaitiaki", which means a keeper, conserver, protector and guardian of nature. It has a spiritual element and transcends the simple present time. It is about safeguarding the future. He likes the saying 'Ko ahau te awa, ko te awa ko ahau' (I am the river, the river is me), which depicts the relationship between people and the environment. Simon wants to share this experience and message with you and help you be inspired. Join him in Antarctica!
